What are the most effective ways to learn a second (or third) language?
I know that immersion in a foreign culture is an excellent way to learn a language, but not always possible. Other options include classroom instruction, software, books, music and Internet-based programs. Perhaps a combination of the above would work better. Are the Berlitz language schools, as worth the expense? Or, if the software is the way forward, the software is the best? I would like to hear and all the thoughts and opinions on this subject, especially those who have gone through this process (with or without success). Thank you very much.
Here are some ideas many second language learners tend not to notice. FIRST: Completely eliminate idioms when you speak. We use many phrases that are not understood in other countries, and used that do not understand. Examples: Getting to first base. The switch. Hitch a ride. Hit the road. Put yourself in a new student English and ask yourself if you really understand the meaning of 'hit the road' when you hear or you Litterally trying to "hit the road '? Even between England and North America, for example, "call someone". In North America it means get someone pregnant. In England, it means knocking on your door. So you can see how embarrassing it would be if you encounter an expression that means more. SECOND: Realize that not always one by one, exchanging words in the translation. Some languages can express an idea in just one word on a few, and vice versa. Hand in hand with this, the understanding that the idea expressed is important, not the way it was said. The fact that the sentence was not built the way they would have said it does wrong. THIRD: Pronunciation can be improved by reciting the names of the things you see when walking, and conversations you have with yourself in the absence of friends to practice. (Warning: Do not do this in the vicinity of mental institutions.) Last: I cheated. I learned the worlds easiest language first and now I understand better English (language native) and I'm in a better position to learn more languages.
